Count your each lose as win

In my previous post, I provided few indicators that should help you building leadership quality in yourself. If you consider to follow those, you will probably come across many situations or challenges those might lead you feel that you have lost after all your efforts. But, don't be upset. Whenever you feel such a pain, consider those as your win. I will try to provide examples of few common situations and will help you understand how to consider those as your win.

Your colleagues started avoiding you

You will notice that not all, but few of your colleagues, have started avoiding you. This is the most common situation and will occur when you start pulling your colleagues into open discussions. You might come to know that the people who are avoiding you are also spreading negative impressions across the team and to your immediate reporting manager. You might think that you are loosing your good friends in the organization. Nothing to worry about and don't be upset. Always remember that you are trying to help your colleagues to improve their skill as the part of the overall growth of the organization that you are working for. So, why are you loosing friends or why your colleagues are avoiding you? Here is, why.

Take a firm note that few people have shyness while talking to the mass. Unfortunately, they don't have that skill of communication. To hide their shyness they will either avoid you or will create negativity about you. If you think that talking to them should improve the situation (that means they are really friends of yours), go ahead and talk to them. But, if you don't think so, talk to your immediate reporting manager. If you have a good manager, they will listen to you and take the situation seriously. But, if there is an issue too, talk to your HR (Human Resource) Department. HR will handle the situation. So, you didn't lose it. You actually won the situation by two ways. How? Simple. You have identified who are your real friends and by talking to the HR and helped to identify your organization an opportunity to improve on the weak resources.

Your manager is getting tougher with you each day

This is another possibility that may happen to you. Few indicators from your manager will be - "finish you tasks on time", "I want to see a seminar per week", or "don't take so and so people in the seminar" etc. Even you might find that the day you are going to conduct the seminar of any discussion, you are assigned with tasks just out from the blue. There are three possible reasons for this. Either, you are getting your focus out from your regular tasks, or your manager wants to see more from you or, your manager has somebody else as "favorite".

Well, if you are getting focus out from your tasks, project deadlines will be missed. You should quickly revisit the situation and improve by finishing your tasks on time first. Situation will be at normal for sure.

Every good manager will judge a resource with providing regular feedback to them and loads of tasks assigned to them and see how good are they with time management and efficient work. Face it. That will happen with you as you are improving. This is a good way of judging the potential from a resource. So, don't panic. Prioritize tasks with the help of your manager. Everybody knows that nobody can work in parallel with two different things at the same time. Your manager will also agree to that. This way tasks can be prioritized and can be completed in time.

Most toughest situation is when your manager has someone else as their "favorite". This can definitely demolish all your willingness to do good things for the organization. But, wait and think that organizations don't have success with a single manager or with their "favorite". Organizational success is a team work. Contributions from each member counts towards the success. Here, your patience will be judged, and rest assure that those people will have no place in the organization over a short period of time as management level over them are also observing. :)

So, you can see here you also wins by improving focus on your work, time management, work efficiently and most importantly your patience. You are a fighter now.

You are switched across different projects so frequently

You might notice that you are assigned tasks on various projects frequently. For example, you were working projects with some technology, but you are now assigned with some other project with a completely different technology platform to you. Oops! You are totally new to the technology and you have a deadline. You might think that you were not performing well in the old project and you are shifted. Well, that might be the situation (hopefully, it is not). If yes, you have to work hard to get back things in place. If it's not, then you are improving. Then the reason behind the shifting you from one technology to another is that the management sees a potential in you. Excited? You should be.

You win here either by improving your knowledge on the technology or by getting your hands dirty in another technology which is new to you. Isn't it every engineer's dream to work with new technologies?

These are few common situations that I have outlined and there are many. But, you see that when you start improving yourself, it doesn't happen overtime and it's not easy. It is a continuous process of wining over tough situations and become a true leader. Always remember that unless you fail, you can not become a leader. Always extract the positives out from extremely negative situations.

As always, I will be seeking your comments and opinions to improve. I would also love to learn your experiences and how did you overcome such situations.

Thank you!
